Description:
Background
In 2017, the updated classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions was proposed and recommended for its use by the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology. The proposed changes were summarized in 20 articles simultaneously published in the Journal of Periodontology and Journal of Clinical Periodontology in June 2018. Feedback provided by periodontists, other dental specialists, general dentists, and undergraduate dental students has suggested that they found the new classification challenging to comprehend and apply chairside, therefore potentially introducing a risk of patient mismanagement.
Technology Overview
Researchers at UTHealth have developed the PocketPerio phone application to enhance learner’s understanding of the 2017 Classification and apply it to the dentist’s chairside to make more accurate and consistent periodontal diagnoses.
Each proposed diagnosis follows by the suggested treatment approaches. Both proposed diagnoses and treatment suggestions are based on the available evidence in the literature, including the publications released by the AAP in the special “2017 Classification” issues of the Journal of Periodontology and Journal of Clinical Periodontology in June 2018.
